Latinx Skate Edit-a-thon

Possibly the world’s first skateboarding-themed Wikipedia edit-a-thon took place this month at Fordham University! Wikipedia for Educators at Fordham and the Skateboarding Digital History Project hosted the edit-a-thon at the Rose Hill campus. In honor of Latinx history month, we edited articles about Latinx skateboarders.
Six editors participated in the event. Many curious people stopped by to ask questions. We learned about the vibrant skate scene on our campus and hope to see more skaters attend next year’s edit-a-thon!
Altogether we edited 44 articles and created one new article, on skateboarder Jaime Reyes.
LGTBQ+ Music Edit-a-thon

Our second edit-a-thon took place at our Lincoln Center campus to celebrate LGBTQ+ month.
We were excited to have two new editors to Wikipedia join us. In less than 5 minutes, they signed up for a new account. After a few more minutes spent reviewing editing basics, they were ready to work. By the end of the night, our group had made a total of 17 edits and added 13 references to Wikipedia.
Upcoming: Native American Heritage Edit-a-thon
November 14, 2019
This November, join the Wikipedia for Educators at the Lincoln Center campus to celebrate Native American Heritage Month. We’ll improve coverage of indigenous people on Wikipedia, which happens to be the Internet’s seventh most visited website.

About Wikipedia for Educators at Fordham
Wikipedia for Educators at Fordham supports and promotes the use of Wikipedia in the classroom, organizes edit-a-thons on campus, and promotes Wikipedia events in the community. This is an open group comprised of faculty, staff, and students of Fordham University. We hold monthly virtual meetings to plan events and discuss Wikipedia issues.
In 2018, we had 76 editors, including 18 people new to editing Wikipedia, who participated in campus edit-a-thons. The 170 articles we edited have already garnered millions views
The benefits of engaging with Wikipedia in the classroom include evaluating articles, analyzing the content and quality of sources, increasing digital citizenship skills, publishing for the web and a public audience, contributing to the largest knowledge-base on the planet, and addressing Wikipedia’s gender and content gaps
