This month, the Office of Information Technology is celebrating Kristen Treglia, Senior Instructional Technologist. Kristen works in the Educational Technologies department and has been with Fordham for 17 years. Throughout her time at Fordham, she has worked on many interesting projects and developed both professionally and personally. To honor Kristen’s contributions we are sharing a little about her story.
How long have you been employed at Fordham, and what roles have you held?
I’ve been at Fordham since 2008, first as an Instructional Technologist and now as a Senior Instructional Technologist. I have a voracious sense of curiosity and being part of a university provides me with endless opportunities to explore, share the joy of learning, help others, and engage with new ideas.
What’s the day-to-day of your role like?
Every day is different, but I usually start by reviewing my calendar for the day and week to gauge how much time I have for tasks between meetings to accomplish my goals for the week. I check my inbox only a few times a day to maintain focus (check out the recording and resources from my workshop on Inbox Zero!). My day might include anything from helping faculty to create collaborative whiteboards for group work to providing guidance on integrating interactive timelines into assessments.
While I provide technical support when needed, my primary focus is partnering with faculty to leverage technology that enhances teaching and learning in both classroom and online settings. I collaborate with faculty to integrate innovative technologies, design and deliver workshops on digital pedagogy, curate educational resources, and provide strategic guidance on emerging tech trends. I also lead and participate in various projects and initiatives, including:
- Faculty Development Events – Organizing Faculty Technology Orientation, Faculty EdTech Bootcamps, and Faculty Technology Day.
- Special Interest Groups – Facilitating faculty groups on AI and Gamification in education.
- Content Management & Digital Curation – Managing, creating, and curating resources for Academic Technologies, EdTech, Blackboard, Labs & Training, Emerging Technology and Learning Design, Research Computing, and Academic Software websites.
What is your proudest accomplishment in IT and/or life in general?
I’ve been fortunate to have incredible mentors and opportunities, but one of my proudest professional accomplishments was being recommended to join an international team of experts for the Instructional Design and E-Learning Project in Jordan. In 2019, I collaborated with veteran educators and connected learning specialists through a partnership between UNHCR and the Ministry of Education in Jordan to develop a scalable, evidence-based pedagogical framework for tertiary education. In December, we traveled to Jordan for a five-day training program for professors, e-learning professionals, and directors of e-learning centers from universities across the country.
It was an honor to be part of a project that impacted not just faculty and students but also refugee communities—demonstrating the power of education to change lives.
When you are not working, what are some passion projects/hobbies/activities that you’re involved in?
I’m a huge Star Wars fan, and one of my new favorite weekly traditions is movie nights with my 4-year-old niece, who is just discovering the Star Wars universe. I also love to read—usually a book a day. My favorite genres are science fiction and fantasy. I’m passionate about STEM education and curate resources at ilovepiday.com to support Pi Day celebrations and mathematical curiosity. I’ve just published The EdTech Bible V2, a curated collection of practical strategies, tools, and reflections drawn from years of real-world experience supporting faculty and exploring the evolving role of technology in education. Additionally, I’ve started a historical archive project dedicated to preserving the legacy of the 105th Air National Guard unit in memory of my father.
How have you grown professionally while on our team?
I came to Fordham to share what I had already learned as a high school math teacher about how educational technology can transform classrooms and lives, while also gaining hands-on experience to further explore its possibilities. As part of Fordham IT I’ve had the opportunity to collaborate with and learn from amazing faculty and colleagues. Over the years, I’ve deepened my expertise in online learning and instructional design, digital citizenship and emerging technologies, and multimedia and software development to create more engaging and interactive learning experiences.
Educational Technologies is an exciting field and I love that there is always something new to learn. For a full snapshot of my professional journey, you can visit my portfolio.
What is the most unique part about working at Fordham?
There are so many things that are unique to Fordham and I love working with amazing colleagues but in particular Fordham’s strong commitment to social justice stands out. Through my work with faculty in the Graduate School of Social Service, I became involved with the Fordham Institute for Women and Girls (FIWG). As a member, I help organize international conferences focused on advocacy and global issues, including topics like closing the digital divide, gender equity, and technology’s role in social change.
What is something fun or interesting that not many people know about you?
Sharks are my favorite animal. I’ve always been fascinated by them and if it weren’t for my difficulty equalizing the pressure in my ears when scuba diving I’d probably be out studying them in the field as a marine biologist.
