This Thursday and Friday, November 29-30, 2018, the City University of New York (CUNY) will be hosting its 17th Annual CUNY IT Conference at John Jay College of Criminal Justice. The theme of this year’s conference is “Challenges and Opportunities.” Speakers will discuss the difficulties technology users face in higher education, as well as the opportunities offered by technology in the classroom. Conference registration is free.
Fordham IT’s own Heather V. Hill will present her work on library learning objects on Friday afternoon, alongside New York City College of Technology (City Tech) librarians Nora Almeida and Junior Tidal, in their presentation titled “You Can’t Always Get What You Want: User Experience & the Shifting Contexts of Library Pedagogy.”

Heather participated in an internship in Instructional Design during the 2017-18 academic year and developed several learning objects for the City Tech Library website, including an Arthurian-themed interactive citation learning game and a LibGuide on citations. In the spring semester, Heather, Nora, and Junior conducted user tests to investigate possible correlations between the pedagogical effectiveness of these tools and student-identified learning styles. In this presentation, Heather and her fellow researchers will describe the results of these tests and provide insights into the value of failure in UX study design, how wrong data is better than no data, and whether qualitative problems can have quantitative solutions.
Keynote speakers at this conference are Anya Kamenetz, lead education reporter at NPR, and Stephen Brier, Senior Academic Technology Officer at the CUNY Graduate School and University Center. Other speakers include faculty members, librarians, graduate students, pedagogy specialists, IT professionals and more from colleges across New York City.
