Scalar, Online Academic Publishing Platform, Offered at Fordham

0

Fordham IT’s Instructional Technology Academic Computing (ITAC) group has concluded a pilot project involving the use of Scalar in the classroom during the fall 2016 semester. We are now offering this free digital authoring/publishing software to all Fordham faculty who would like to use this multimedia tool in their spring 2017 (and beyond!) classes.

Scalar is an open-source, authoring/publishing tool designed by Alliance for Networking Visual Culture (ANVC) (based at the University of Southern California) in association with Vectors and  IML, and with the support of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and the National Endowment for the Humanities. Scalar makes it easy for researchers to publish long-form, born-digital scholarship online. Scalar enables users to assemble media from multiple sources and juxtapose them with their own writing in a variety of ways. Minimal technical expertise is required.

Scalar gives faculty and students tools to structure essays and book-length works in ways that take advantage of the unique capabilities of digital writing, including nested, recursive, and non-linear formats. The platform also supports collaborative authoring and reader commentary, as well as the ability to visualize data, add metadata, annotate images, audio, video, and text (of course).

Will Fenton, a PhD candidate at Fordham, is using Scalar for his research project, “Digital Paxton.” He won this year’s NYCDH Graduate Student Digital Project Award for his work.
