Making education inclusive and accessible to all is not a new idea. But the tools to create and implement accessibility have improved tremendously in recent years.

This past May 23rd, over 130 Fordham faculty and administrators attendeded Fordham IT’s 19th annual Faculty Technology Day. The annual conference brings Fordham educators together to learn and share ideas about new teaching and research strategies in the digital age.  This year, participants explored ways technology enables inclusion and accessibility in the classroom and the university in general with the theme, “The Equalizing Power of Technology in Education.”

The day-long event featured two keynote speakers. Chancey Fleet, the Assistive Technology Coordinator at the Andrew Heiskell Braille and Talking Book Library branch of the New York Public Library, gave a moving overview of how faculty and support staff can contribute to inclusive planning and design thinking to expand accessibility in educational settings.  Her morning talk was followed in the afternoon by Dr. Tim Swift, Associate Professor at the Haub School of Business, St. Joseph’s University. He provided insights on how higher education institutions can use technology effectively to deliver quality education in a constantly changing education market.

Both speakers generated lively discussions on the power of technology to create universal access to education in traditional and non-traditional settings.

Workshops led by Fordham faculty and IT and library staff, networking opportunities, and door prizes rounded out the celebration of faculty and technology at Fordham. See the full agenda.
