Welcome to the AI Ready Blog, where we explore the evolving world of Artificial Intelligence and Generative AI in education, fostering dialogue, experimentation, and research to enhance teaching, learning, and collaboration across disciplines.
Note: Features may change with future updates.
Welcome back to the last session in our series on Google Gemini in action! In previous sessions, we covered NotebookLM, document interaction, and advanced prompting techniques. This week, we’ll explore how AI can be used for something a bit different: preparing for tough conversations. We’ll be using AI as a role-play tool, and I’ll be demonstrating this with some live examples.
Our objective today is to explore real-world scenarios and demonstrate how AI can assist in assessment creation. We’ll use Gemini as a conversational partner to simulate interactions, refine our responses, and enhance our preparation for various situations.
Let’s get started!
Activity 4: Interactive Role-Play and Assessment
Demo Video Forthcoming
Example A: “Gemini Debate” – Exploring Different Perspectives
This showcases Gemini’s ability to generate arguments and counterarguments, fostering critical thinking and debate.
Step 1: Debate Preparation
- Choose a higher education topic
- Use this prompt:
I am a higher ed administrator preparing for a debate about [your topic]. I’ll argue in favor. Please:
1. Make an opening argument against my position
2. Evaluate my responses
3. Suggest counterpoints to strengthen the discussion
Example B: “Gemini Role-Play Scenario” – Simulating Real-World Interactions
This demonstrates how Gemini can be used to simulate conversations and prepare for real-world interactions.
Step 1: Role-Play Scenario
Try this prompt for a parent interaction:
I would like to run a role-play scenario to prep for a tough conversation. I want to cancel my cable subscription. For this scenario, I will be the customer attempting to cancel. You will act as the customer service representative. Be genuinely resistant, using tactics such as offering promotional discounts, highlighting the benefits of the service, or questioning my reasons for canceling. Despite any frustration, aim to remain polite and assertive as in reality. Begin by asking me about my intention to cancel and the reason for doing so. After the role play, ask me what I thought went well, and what I thought could have gone better.
Example C: “Gemini Quiz” – Interactive Knowledge Assessment
This showcases Gemini’s ability to generate quizzes and assess our understanding of a topic.
Step 1: Create Assessment Materials
Generate a quiz:
Create a 5-question assessment about [your topic]including:
– 3 multiple-choice questions
– 2 open-ended questions
– Answer key with explanations
– Suggested grading rubric
General Tips for Success
- Save successful prompts for future use. Use this template to create your own AI Prompt Library.
- Iterate and refine based on results.
- Share effective prompts with colleagues.
- Document specific use cases for your department.
- Don’t be afraid to push back on the AI when you don’t like an answer!

Conclusion
As we’ve seen in the role-play examples, Gemini can be a useful tool for practicing communication skills and preparing for various conversations. By simulating different scenarios, it allows us to try out different approaches and get more comfortable with potentially difficult interactions.
If you’re interested in exploring this further, I encourage you to experiment with different prompts and scenarios. You can also find more information and resources on our website.
