Note: Features may change with future updates.

In a world of ever-growing digital content, organizing long documents can be a challenge. Luckily, Google Docs has introduced a new feature to make your life easier: document tabs.

This update that just launched, enables you to structure documents more effectively by creating focused tabs for different sections. Whether you’re drafting a project report, lesson plan, or collaborative document, tabs can help you keep everything in one place while making navigation easier for you and your collaborators.

How it Works

Tabs in Google Docs allow you to break long documents into manageable sections, each dedicated to a specific topic.

For example:

  • Instructors can organize course syllabi into tabs for grading policies, class schedules, and assignment details.
  • Researchers can use tabs to separate literature reviews, methodology, and results in a single, cohesive document.
  • Administrators can create tabs for meeting agendas, budget reports, and performance reviews, all in one place.

You can even create subtabs for further clarity, like adding subtabs for different weeks within a class schedule. Each tab can also be visually represented with an emoji, helping you and your collaborators easily identify the content.

How to Get Started

For any document with two or more tabs, the new left panel will automatically display, making navigation simple. You can share individual tabs by clicking on the three-dot menu next to a tab and selecting Copy link—ideal for sharing just the relevant information with colleagues or students.

See the Use document tabs in Google Docs help topic for detailed instructions.
