Blackboard MailbagWelcome to the Blackboard Mailbag, where we feature a commonly asked question that has been hitting our mailbox recently: blackboard@fordham.edu. Check out our Bb Mailbag archive of previous Blackboard questions and answers or visit fordham.edu/blackboard for additional resources.

Note:  Features may change with future updates.

Q: Why are my students automatically receiving zeros for work they have not completed? Can I turn off automatic zeros?

A: Automatic Zeros for past due work is enabled by default, which gives students a zero as soon as the assignment is late. However, you can turn this feature off:

Open Gradebook settings by clicking the settings button (gear icon) on the top-right corner of the Gradebook, then scroll to the option that says “Automatic Zeros.” If the option is checked, that is why your students received the zeros automatically.

When you uncheck this option, the following menu will pop up, allowing you to remove the zeros that Blackboard automatically assigned.

Assign Automatic Zeros after changing the settings to clear or keep them

Click Confirm when you have chosen to clear the existing automatic zeros.

Have feedback or suggestions on features?  Blackboard’s parent company Anthology hosts The Idea Exchange.  This is a place specifically for Blackboard to track and manage enhancement requests. It allows for things like upvoting ideas and sharing development plans and statuses. You will need to create an account to access the Idea Exchange.
