A broad workshop introduction to Blackboard Learn, Fordham’s Learning Management System.  Faculty get an overview of the system and learn how to set up their course shell aimed at those faculty who haven’t traditionally used this tool before. Teaching in an asynchronous manner, where learning does not take place at a set time and place, is a great way to stay on track when meeting in person is not possible.  This approach involves instructors creating and/or distributing content (e.g. recorded video lecture, podcasts, voice-overs on PowerPoints, or even just handouts, etc.) ahead of time and supplementing it with additional elements (e.g. email, discussion boards, text, assignments, polls, etc.) to achieve class interaction but in a nonparallel fashion. Using a conference tool in lieu of in-class meetings is a great way to retain the “live” experience.  Blackboard Collaborate is one such tool, providing an online virtual classroom and meeting space within Fordham’s Learning Management System, allowing users to connect via audio, see each other via webcams, use a chat tool, collaborate on documents, and view presentations as well as other features.
